Sunrise at Morjim: Where Olive Ridleys Come to Dream

The taxi drops you at the edge of the dunes at 3:50am. No streetlights. No music from beach shacks. Just the sound of the Arabian Sea in total darkness, and somewhere ahead of you, a forest department volunteer with a single torch.

Morjim Beach in December is not the party destination people imagine when they think North Goa. It is a nesting ground — one of the few remaining sites in the state where Olive Ridley sea turtles haul themselves ashore to lay their eggs.

When a turtle is nesting, you cannot use your phone torch, cannot speak above a whisper. You become very small and very still. It is the most humbling thing.

Planning Your Visit

Turtle nesting season runs from October to March. GoaTaxis can arrange early morning pickups from Calangute, Anjuna, or Baga — typically a 25-minute drive to Morjim.
